Jacques-Eugene Manna

1867-1928

Linguistic and literary historian, He was born in Baqofah, Ninveh province. He was ordained priest in 1889 and worked as a teacher of Syriac (Aramaic) in both the Patriarchal Priestly and St. John Institutes until 1902.At the same year was consecrated bishop. He disagreed with the Chaldean Patriarchate and therefore he was prevented traveling to Europe. In 1928 he disappeared in a mysterious way for 28 days then his body was found in the Tigris River. He perfected Syriac and Arabic . Of his major books: Aramaic-Arabic Dictionary: Mosul, 1900 / A grammar of the Aramaic Language, Mosul, 1896 / A Collection of Syriac Literature: Mosul 1901 (2V.), Mosul 1900.
